Pokhara Journalist Charged With Cyber Crime Offense

OSNEPALNEWS, Kathmandu, 16th April: The editor of the weekly Tandav News, Arjun Giri was detained and arrested in Pokhara under cyber law. If convicted, Giri could face a fine of 100,000 rupees and up to five years in prison, under clause 47 of the Electronic Transaction Act for “publication of illegal materials in electronic format.”

Giri was arrested following the complaint from businessman Bipendra Raj Batas who has charged Giri of defamation. The weekly had published a news on Batas’ involvement in a land-fraud case on April 5. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called on authorities in Nepal to not pursue charges under the country’s cybercrime act against Giri.
