Pokhara- Former President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has said rights of press should not be curtailed. Curtailing press freedom deteriorates democracy, he underscored.During a programme organized by the Federation of Nepali Journalists Kaski Chapter to confer the Kirti Memorial Service Trust award here Tuesday, the former President conferred the award on veteran journalist Kishor Nepal.
The award carries the purse of Rs 111,111 along with a felicitation letter and shawl.Both the ruling parties and the opposition have equally significant role to prosper the democracy, Dr Yadav said, adding that the people and issues from Madhes and hills should be heard and addressed together forging unity. He also hailed federal democracy of Nepal, saying it is cared with rule and norms, this system has golden furture.
He underscored that political parties, media, and civil society must contribute from their sides for the institutionalized development of democracy. On a different note, the former President made aware the concerned stakeholders about the eroding ecosystem in Chure region due to over exploitation.
On the occasion, National Assembly member Brinda Rana viewed that ill efforts were made to curtail press freedom, which harms democracy. In the name of regulating press by the coming laws, free press would be controlled, she showed concern.Democracy fighter and award selection committee coordinator Badri Binod Pratik informed that Kishor Nepal was selected for the award in recognition to his contribution to society through journalism.
Honoured personality Nepal viewed that the activities against free press must be discouraged.
